Helpful Hints
Absences
-If your child is absent you may request their work. If requested before 8:30 the work can be picked up in the office by 2:30. If you can not request by that time we can make sure the work will be in the office by 3:30.
-Please call or email if you are expecting your child to be out.
-Your child will be given a makeup work folder that explains what work needs to be completed. If it is a one day absence, please make sure the old work is completed along with the new work.
Behavior
-Students receive a ticket each day in class and get to keep their ticket if they have good behavior throughout the class. After they collect ten tickets they may trade their tickets in for a reward.
-Students will receive "marks" for not completing homework or following school/classroom rules.
-Each "mark" is 5 minutes off Freedom Friday. If a student receives 3 or more marks then they have lost Freedom Friday.
General Information:
· Check to see that homework is complete and initial planner every night.
· Graded papers will come home in a folder on Tuesdays. Please look through papers and return the folder signed.
· Behavior and homework marks are written in the planners.
Language Arts:
· Reading homework each night is to read for at least 20 minutes. Your child should be reading a chapter book from start to finish before beginning another book. Reading logs are kept by each student and need to be initialed each night.
· Writing – we will begin the year writing one paragraph and then move to multiple paragraphs. Your child has a writing folder that stays at school. Graded papers will be kept in the folder, but you will be sent copies of the grades.
· Spelling assignment sheets are given out each Monday. They contain the assignments for the week and are kept in the HW folder. A pretest needs to be given each Thursday and signed by an adult. Tests are Friday unless otherwise noted.
Math:
· Students should use their notebook or book to help with any skills that are confusing.
· Test reviews are completed the day before a test to give you something to study by. These will come home in their notebook.
· Skills reviews are always the homework after a test. Please check your child’s skills review, circle any they get wrong, and have them correct their work. When the entire paper has been corrected please sign. Each student will receive +2 points for a signed paper and -2 points for a paper not signed.
Social Studies:
· Notebooks are the most important tool. Homework will always be to “tell someone what you learned today.” Use the notebook to help with the story.
· Flashcards will be made before a test and should be used to study.
· Skills reviews are always the homework after a test. Each student will have a social studies review folder with a review packet that will help them find all the answers for the skills review.
· A cumulative test review packet will be sent home shortly to keep at home. These are the test questions and answers for each unit. This should be used to study for tests and to review for the SOL test in May.
Science:
· Science homework will be assigned daily.
· Mrs. Manns’ site – mrsmannsfourth.weebly.com will include unit PowerPoint presentations that will assist with studying. Corresponding science slides will be reviewed during each unit. You may access the science slide shows by clicking “helpful link-science.”

· Science binders will be used throughout the year and saved for 5th grade.
· Please do not toss out any science papers as they will be needed to complete binder grade.
